AdvancED, Measured Progress Launch Survey of Assessment Practices

Educators will become fluent in the language and practice of assessment, thanks to the Survey of Assessment Practices launched by AdvancED and Measured Progress.  The survey is designed to address the need for a simple yet comprehensive tool to gauge classroom teachers’ assessment literacy and improve instruction.

An easy-to-use Web-delivered instrument, the Survey of Assessment Practices helps teachers and administrators pinpoint their competencies and misconceptions about the effective use of assessment, ranging from formative, classroom-based assessments to external, summative assessments. In addition, the survey serves as a catalyst for educators to discuss how to use assessment data to inform instruction and improve student learning.

The survey’s creators envision groups of educators within a building or district taking the survey in concert, then coming together as professional learning communities to collaborate to improve instruction based on areas the survey identifies.

The Survey of Assessment Practices is a vehicle designed to spur conversation about balancing assessment practices. Once classroom teachers have completed it, the survey administrator will receive the survey results to frame those conversations and guide groups of colleagues to use the results to chart a path to improved instruction.

Survey of Assessment Practices

“Through our partnership with Measured Progress, we continue to develop valuable tools to help schools and school systems improve,” said AdvancEd President and CEO Dr. Mark Elgart.  “The Survey of Assessment Practices is another resource for advancing student learning.”

“Coming from a teaching background myself, I know for a fact that assessment in and of itself is not going to improve student learning; teachers and students do that,” said Dr. Michael Ehringhaus, Measured Progress director of professional development. “But if we unleash the rich information that a wide variety of assessments give us—and show educators how to interpret and use this information to both measure and promote student learning—then the results of these assessments can help teachers and students significantly improve the learning that occurs in the classroom.”
